3rd Quarter

Welcome to the 3rd Quarter!

It's hard to believe that we are already "half" way through the school year.  I hope our students and parents have enjoyed the year as much as the teachers, administration, and staff has!  Time flies and does not give way to blog-writing, so I am going to keep it shorter in the hopes that I will be able to post more often.

Looking Back:
We had a great holiday season and a great start to our new year.  I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are enjoying watching our Charger girls and boys on the basketball court; if you haven't had a chance to catch a game I highly recommend you do so!  We are so proud of our athletes and their work and dedication.

Snofest has already come and gone; I'd like to send a big thank you to the teachers for all of the help during the week and the students for their behavior and enthusiasm.  Snofest always reminds me of one of the most amazing parts of being an educator--the fun we get to have with our students and staff.  Snofest is always a great way for classes to come together and work as a team while showing school spirit and pride, and our students do it so well!  I special congrats to Queen Syra, King Nick, and the senior class for winning the competition!

Looking Ahead

Testing season is quickly approaching and I am confident that our students will do well.  Our seniors are beginning to plan for college, our juniors are beginning to think of their senior year, and our school is preparing for an exciting spring.  There are a lot of events coming up in the next few months and I want to highly encourage parents to ensure that students are in school every day they possibly can be.  Being here every day is the first step towards a successful future.

February is "I Love to Read" month so please stay tuned for special events planned by our staff, including "Muffins for Moms" and "Donuts for Dads".

Have a great start to first quarter and I hope everyone stays warm!

End of the Quarter

Good afternoon!

I think it's fair to say that this will not be a weekly blog.  Although I have the best of intentions I cannot find the time to update weekly!  I think I will change it to a "when I can" blog, with the hope that I find more time as the year goes on.

It's hard to believe that today is the end of the quarter and that we are beginning to prepare for cold weather and basketball.  I think I can speak for everyone when I say congratulations to the Charger Football and Volleyball teams on two great seasons.  I know they didn't end the way that the teams hoped they would, but the school and community are proud of what our kids and coaches accomplished this year.  I truly believe that it is not the end result that matters, it is what the kids learned while getting to the end that really counts.  The ultimate goal is that the students can apply the lessons they learned to their life as they become an adult.

As we leave the fall behind us we have a lot to look forward to in the winter months.  As I mentioned before, the end of the quarter is Friday, November 1st.  By now students are settled into their new schedules and the new school year--sometimes a little too settled.  Please remember that not every absence is excused; students who have more than 5 unexcused absences will be treated as truant, and will be turned over to the Pennington County Truancy Board for student and family assistance regarding attendance (2013-2014 Goodridge Public School Handbook, p. 8).  It is detrimental to your child's education that they are here every day; even a child who does well in school can still suffer due to excessive absences.

Looking Ahead Into the Second Quarter:

Election Day and Referendum Voting: Tuesday, November 5th in the small gym

ACT Registration Deadline for ACT Test on December 14th: Friday, November 8th
The juniors and seniors will be registering on Monday, November 4th.

Boys basketball begins Monday, November 11th:

Veteran's Day Program: Tuesday, November 12th, 9:00 a.m.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Tuesday, November 12th and Thursday, November 14th from 4-8 p.m.

Scholastic Book Fair: Tuesday, November 12th (8 a.m. - 8 p.m.); Wednesday, November 13th (8 a.m.-4 p.m.); and Thursday November 14th (8 a.m.-8 p.m.)

No School on Monday, November 11th and Friday, November 15th

Fall Sports Banquet: Thursday, November 21st in Goodridge

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Week 5--Midterm!

Good afternoon!

It is hard to actually believe it, but we are now entering the 5th week of school.  I am happy to report that we have had a very successful five weeks both in and out of the classroom.  I am very appreciative of the staff; not only do they care about the students and do everything possible to ensure they are successful, but they have also been very patient and understanding with me as I "learn the ropes" as well.  I've learned that there is no amount of schooling that can really prepare one for this position--every day here is a new adventure; not only for myself but for the staff as well.   "It takes a whole village to raise a child" is an African Proverb that I believe is so true for schools.  Although students may only have one teacher or spend the majority of their day with one group of kids, they are really influenced every day by everyone in the school and in the community.  Every morning when I'm in the lobby greeting students I see our "village" coming together to care for one another.  I see siblings, family members, friends, and even bus drivers come into the doors holding on to the hands of scared preschoolers and kindergartners; I see staff stick around the lobby instead of having coffee to welcome the kids and wish them a great day; and I see parents volunteering their precious time to help out in the building.  We really do have an amazing community of students and adults who truly and wholeheartedly care about or school and our students.  Thank you to everyone who puts their heart into keeping Goodridge a safe place for our kids to learn and grow!

Week 2--Homecoming Week

Welcome to the second week of school!  I think I can speak for everyone when I say last week was a great way to start the school year.  The kids were great, teachers were excited, and everyone ended the week on a good note.  Congratulations to both the girls volleyball team and the boys football team on last week's wins!  Our sports program makes it easy to be a Charger fan.

Last week was the beginning of many new journeys our staff and students will take together.  We welcomed a few new faces in our student body, and we are delighted to have them join our Charger community.  We are thoroughly enjoying our new staff members, and I know they have been a great addition to the school.  It was a lot of firsts for me as well; first week as a principal, first week outside of the English classroom, and Sawyer's first week of pre-school.  Last week was the first time I have been on the other side of the fence--sending my child into the care of a teacher instead of being the teacher greeting the child.  It was heartbreaking!  I think all parents can relate how that first day feels.  I am confident that your children (and your heart) are in good hands.

*Today we unpacked boxes of new Charger clothing (thanks to Salo Signs & More).  Everything looks awesome and we will be distributing items tomorrow (Tuesday).  If you missed this order it is not too late--Courtney will be closing another order on Wednesday (same items available) and she is already talking about working on a winter sports order.  If you haven't visited their site please do so @ Salo Signs and More.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe Homecoming Week!  Good luck Chargers!
